Hollywood's Insatiable Appetite for Torture Porn

Joss Whedon, creator of cult TV shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, concurs. According to the Australian, Whedon wrote a letter to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) rallying against Captivity's promotional material. "The advent of torture-porn and the total dehumanizing not just of women (though they always come first) but of all human beings has made horror a largely unpalatable genre."

Yeah I don't know what's happening to the horror genre these days. Not cool. Way to go Joss for speaking out!

A friend and I were just talking about the ad campaign for "Captivity" and thought it was disgusting - and not in the fun, squirm in your seat kind either. If anything, it made me not want to see it. The snuff film factor in the advertising reads crystal clear.

I'm not one of those people who constantly exclaim "what about the children", but in this case, I don't fancy a sit down chat with my 3 year old nephew on what happened to the lady and why a hook was in her face. Besides that, can you imagine the kind of crowd that would attract and enduring *that* horror? Your I.Q. would drop precipitously just from being in a room full of voyeuristic date-rapists-to-be. Yuck.

And Hollywood wonders why the box office takes a beating?
