Why is Buffy so popular??

Ok, before the flaming starts: I'm a huge Firefly fan. I'm trying to give Buffy a chance. I have friends that love it and so I decided to Netflix it. I tried to go in with an open mind and understanding that the show is "tongue in cheek". Anyway here we go:

Episode 1: Cheesy and corny. Stale, bad jokes and the vampires aren't even believable.
Episode 2: See episode 1.
Episode 3: Ok, I'm getting into it alittle. Not a bad episode...Buffy acting drunk due to the spell cast on her was funny.
Episode 4: Umm, what the hell? An episode about a big bug substitute teacher? The big mantis at the end was hilarious, they could have at least tried to make it look right.

So far I see no reason why this show lasted as long as it did and Firefly got canned after 1 season. Please, someone tell me why I should keeping adding Buffy to my Netflix. I really, really want to like this show but I ca'nt force myself to watch if it doesn't get any better.

    Kevin,

At least hang in there untill you get into season Two. I love every season of Buffy, but admittedly, the first season is a tad weak. I think Buffy and all the scoobies will grow on you.

As far as why Firefly was cancelled, there is no good reason for it. Firefly, as I am sure you will agree, is one of the best Sci-Fi programs ever, period.

Firefly was cancelled because FOX being the right-wing idiots that they are screwed up the series. The pilot TV movie was never shown, so they instead made Joss re-write the first episode to turn it into a pilot/first episode, sort of a summary. Then they aired it at weird times and not on a regular schedule from what I remember. They yanked the series before even showing the last three episodes, which are now available on DVD, along with the original pilot movie.

FOX is known for doing this to other TV shows, idiots.

As for Buffy, way better than Firefly in my opinion and the real fun begins when Spike is introduced (I forget which season, late in the second I believe.) I agree, the first season is probably the weakest, but stick with it, the Joss magic kicks in.

Gawd, all this talk makes me want to break out the Buffy universe and start watching from the beginning, again.

Firefly was also incredibly expensive to make because of all the special effects.

At the beginning of Buffy there was also very little money per episode, which is why they seem so cheesy. And remember, those episodes first aired in 97 (or so). TV production has changed a lot in 10 years. I think that was before mainstream reality television (the real world was on but that was about it) which is really cheap to make. I believe when Firefly was canceled it was replaced with The Swan (reality cosmetic surgery show).

For me, I liked the strong female lead. She could actually take care of herself and other people, which is not something that was widely seen on TV (still isn't). And I liked the dialogue. To me it's witty and funny.

            Agreed.

For me, the attraction is the dialogue. Later, things get darker and more complex. I started to care much more about the characters. Sure, it gets soapy, but what the hell, I'm currently in Season 6, paralleling with Angel, and when I'm done, I'll start over!

Alright, you have me convinced to hang in there. There are a few shows I enjoy that I hated at first (although Andromeda is the only I can remember by name right now). Also, a couple of my favorite shows (which both got axed far too soon) have strong female leads (Dark Angel and Witchblade). THanks for all the info guys and gals! :)

Also, Amy about the strong female lead lacking on TV....I think it's getting better but you're right. Though my favorite shows right now: Battlestar Galactica and NCIS, both have very strong female characters. They may not be in charge but they kick ass! :)

                    Besides with lines like,

Willow “I think I need to sit down now”
                    Buffy “You are sitting down”
                    Willow “Oh, good for me”

How can you not like it.

SO did you see the Buffy movie? You should see that first.

It's like the first season of Star Trek TNG. It' sucked. The boy save the ship to many times. They should have killed him off.

I was also a DVD Buffy fan, and I have to admit, when I first watched it, my reaction was, "Okay, that's cute. Why is my best friend such a RABID fan?"

The truth is I have NO IDEA why the show made it past the first season. However, it is so unbelievably worth the few bad episodes in the series for the rest of the show. The cast is amazing, and the places Joss takes the characters and the plot changed the way I thought about TV as a medium.

currently, my friend initiated a Buffy nite for old fans and for newbies that have never seen Buffy. I think it is useful for the newbies to have the "older" crowd around as we can all laugh at some of the cheese from the first season. but they also take cues from some of the more interesting parts of the story lines and from our enjoyment of the snappy dialogue. we are now into the first episodes of season two- Spike and Drusilla made their arrival just last friday night. Tonite, two more episodes to be relished with friends and new aquaintances.

keep with it. you will find it rewarding!

Wait until you get to Glorificus in season four. Now that's party material, so many good lines and voted the best bi-polar villain ever, by me.

I'm happy I started watching Buffy by watching reruns, and I started into like season 3 or 4, so that by the time they started replaying the seasons I could appreciate season 1. Personally I like Buffy after High School. Season 4 has some great epsidodes, Hush & Fear Itself. I could see how girls might appreciate Buffy more but I know lots of guys who dig the shows just as much. Season 6 is probably my favorite.
Keep watching and you'll eventually become a true buffy addict...

              Season 3 is my favorite!

I started to watch the summer reruns of during season 2 though. I didn't really need to know the whole story between Buffy & Angel but after seeing the ending of Becoming Pt. 2, I was sooo hooked and happy that I didn't have to wait long until Season 3 began.

I'm slowly getting through Season 1. The last two I watched were "Don't Kill a Boy on the First Date" (or something like that). and "the Pack". Don't Kill... was pretty good but I "the Pack" really had my attention. That was an excellent episode. It contained the character interaction and one-liners I saw in Firefly that made me love that show. I may be eating my words as I slowly turn into a Buffy fan.

Buffy grabbed me big time in season 1: the effects may be cheesy but damn, the characters are neat and the dialogue witty.

I love Buffy and Angel but I consider them the shows where Whedon developed the skills that he took to the next level in Firefly.

I always tell my friends to start with Season Two, and then after they're into it they go back to Season One just for completion's sake. A lot of my affection for the First Season is retroactive, being fond of the characters and knowing who they'll become. My God, the first year of Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" gave no hint of how profound it would become, and when I was a tyke reading the first year of Fantastic Four, no one could have predicted the archetypes that Lee and Kirby were going to cut loose in a year or two (ah, when "epic" meant only three issues or an annual). Robert E. Howard's Conan stories went the opposite direction; if Howard had died after writing just "The Tower of the Elephant", "Rogues in the House" and "The Frost Giant's Daughter", we'd all be thinking of Conan as sensitive and profound.
It's probably in the nature of any series of tales to either grow in depth or start out strong and then weaken as it gets turned over to hacks. It's interesting that the Trojan war starts out with such incredible power (the Judgement of Paris, the Thousand Ships, Iphigenia) then weakens with a lot of Greeks rummaging around in the underbrush of islands no one cares about, then gets fierce bad strong again when they reach Troy. Does anyone else suspect retrofitting? Homer (actually not himself, but a Greek of the same name) probably went back to the beginning of the epic and wrote explanatory tales to match the strength of later episodes; otherwise he'll be singing a half-hour of geneological material and has to keep telling the audience, "No, wait! It gets better!"

I watched the Buffy movie with Kristy Swanson, tried to watch it several times, just couldn't sit through it. So when the series came out, I balked. I was like sounds stupid, dumb name, gonna be a dumb show.
During the 2nd season for lack of something better to watch I gave it a shot and became instantly addicted. However I also love Xena. For some strange reason i am drawn to strong, kick-ass female heroins.
The thing I learned about Buffy as seasons went along, is that she portrays a girl who just wants to be a tennager but has a responsibility that she has no choice but to accept. She is your average normal teen, well except for the obvious.
I love Willow, or I grew to love her as time went by. Faith is also my favorite second to Buffy.
Yes a lot of the fight scenes are fake-ish, the monsters are so-so, but I like the dialogue and the actors.
However, when Buffy-The Musical came out, I felt like I was in some sort of stupid, ass-kicking time warp. It was embarrassing to even put it out on the air, but in the end it had a message.
Buffy relates to the younger generation and I think she especially relates to teen girls who have many of the same problems she has, except they aren't fighting demons, not physical ones anyway.
The show relates to a lot of people and seems to have crossed a lot of age barriers.

I think the age barrier gets crossed when the characters and the metaphors become so profound that people develop their own complex relationships with them. Sometimes Willow is a girl named Ruth that I kissed in middle school, and sometimes she's me (usually when she's wearing black veins in her face and ripping the skin off of people). Modern television worships this god called Demographics. Demographics are evil, and stunting, and limiting, and tell you that you can't or won't like something because no one in the story looks like you.

Remember that episode, I think Buffy had just started college, where that young gang of vampires showed up with another strong female archetype as the leader of the gang? She of course quickly became Buffy's nemesis, giving Buffy a good lashing. There was a chunky vamp in the gang who had some of the best lines, "Does this sweater make me look fat?."

They only lasted one episode, which was a shame. She, the evil vamp leader, was sort of like a weaker Glorificus. It was one of my favorite lesser remarked upon episodes with a typical Joss layered message/lesson.

The episode you are speaking of is one of my favorites, the one where she started college. Great one. I also love "Hush", any Buffy fan will know which one I'm talking about.

I don't remember the soft-shoe demon in the musical, maybe I didn't make it that far?

      Have a good one. Greg

Does she ever... I have a friend who's a manager in a high stress job. She comes home, pops open a beer, puts her feet up and watches an hour of Buffy just to soak up the catharsis. She said Buffy helps her work out her aggression. :)

'Scuse me for enjoying a program that doesn't constantly remind me that the world is a endless sewer with no flotation devices. I mean, I like "NYPD" and "CSI", but something uplifting among all the luridness is nice too.

Dude, my first experience with Buffy was an episode in the second season about the swim team turning into Creatures from the Black Lagoon. I thought it was terribly dumb.

Then this summer I went back and watched the whole series, starting with the third season, which is great, and then the second, which is damn good, and then the first, which starts off TERRIBLE and improves. And then I watched the rest of them in order. As far as spoilers go it wasn't a great idea, but it was really helpful for me to see enough *good* episodes to convince myself that I liked the series before going back and watching the first season. Even the first season has its moments; you just haven't gotten there yet.

I will admit the first season is hard to get through..the second season is even hard, excepting the whole spike and dru thing..but third season makes up for it and fourth and fifth completely kick your ass in many great ways...its like the lord of the rings, once you get past the first book of "and they're walking..and they're walking" it gets massively good. Also, you kinda have to look at it as a longer story arc, so the first season is really just preamble to what is coming..sort of a whole season of setup and exposition..
